Ken Loach’s powerful exploration of a family caught up working in contemporary Britain’s gig economy, desperately  trying to hold it all together. After losing his building job with the financial crash of 2008, Ricky and his family are in debt and he takes on a zero hours franchise as a self-employed delivery driver. To pay for the van he sells the family car, leaving his wife struggling with her home nursing job. However, the family is pushed to breaking point as Ricky becomes increasingly stressed by the pressures of tight schedules and fines imposed by the firm, as well as the demands of his wayward teenage son.

In Christian Petzold’s brilliant and haunting modern-day adaptation of Anna Seghers’s 1944 novel, Transit Visa, Georg, a German refugee, who has escaped a concentration camp and flees to Marseille at the time of the Nazis assumes the identity of a recently deceased writer whose papers he is carrying. There he delves into the delicate and complex culture of the refugee community, becoming enmeshed in the lives of a young mother and son and falling for a mysterious woman named Marie.

The wartime story has been updated to the present, it’s a 1940s drama with 21st-century city scenes, costumes and all the features of familiar modern life. The result is a genuinely disorientating, disturbing effect. As well as being a suspenseful thriller, the drama becomes a mystery about identity, a blend of past, present and possible futures.

In Argentina in 1975, Claudio, a prominent local lawyer and leader, leads a comfortable existence in a quiet provincial town, agreeing to turn a blind eye to the practices of the regime in place.  A stranger arrives in a restaurant and for no apparent reason he begins to assault Claudio. The community supports the lawyer and the stranger is humiliated and gets thrown out. Later on the way home, Claudio and his wife Susana are intercepted by the stranger who is determined to take terrible revenge on him. Claudio tries to stifle the case, without suspecting that this decision will set him of a path of no-return, of death, secrets and silences.

Two Kenyan girls, Kena and Ziki, live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father's shop and plans to start of nursing school, while colourful Ziki spends the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines.  Kena is different from other girls, playing on a football team and dismissing a future ideal of a good husband, marriage and a children. Lingering glances exchanged with Ziki are the start of a dangerous friendship. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly. Soon their friendship grows to romance, but they face prejudice and ignorance in a country where LGBT relationships are still illegal.


In view of the Covid-19 situation, Ventnor Film Society has decided that it is in everyone's best interest to cancel our two screenings of Rafiki on 24th/25th March. We will review our screening of future films nearer the time, but it's is possible more cancellations will occur.

From Pedro Almodovar comes the autobiographical story of an aging film director, Salvador Mallo, (Antonio Banderas) depressed and in pain, recalling the experiences of his life: his childhood in a village in Valencia in the sixties, his first desire, a passionate affair in the Madrid of the 80s, and the pain of the breakup, his last days with his mother. We follow his discovery of the worlds of cinema and music. In recovering his memories, Salvador finds a way to come to terms with his life choices

The film received extended standing ovations at the Cannes and Toronto film festivals and it is interesting that Salvador’s apartment in the film is an exact replica of Almodóvar’s own apartment in Madrid, and even contains his actual furniture and the paintings from the walls. Similarly, Banderas is dress in some of Almodóvar’s own clothes and wears his hair is in similar style to the director's spiky, silver cut.

Hatidze’s peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the arrival of an itinerant family, with their roaring engines, seven rambunctious children and herd of cattle. Hatidze optimistically meets the promise of change with an open heart, it doesn’t take long however, before a conflict evolves that exposes the fundamental tension between nature and humanity, harmony and discord, exploitation and sustainability.
